Choosing an Inflatable Air Mattress for Camping

When you’re going camping there really isn’t any better sleeping choice than an inflatable air mattress for your bed. With the advances in the past few years these beds are a much better sleeping option than they used to be and can give you a comfortable nights rest to get you ready for the full day ahead.

A lot of people end up skimping on their sleeping arrangements because they see it as a part of the “roughing it” experience, but the truth is that if you’re really going to get everything out of your experience in the woods there isn’t any more important time to get a quality nights rest. Your body is going to be out there hiking, or swimming, or doing other physical activities that will be a lot less fun if your back hurts from sleeping on a rock the night before.

In the past an inflatable air mattress would go flat before the night was through, and was often plastic so even when you put a sheet over it on a hot night you could feel the plastic, it was hot, sweaty, and uncomfortable. Luckily, as with most things, they have improved a lot in recent years. They’re usually still plastic, but they have a soft covering on them that makes them infinitely more comfortable. They’re also a lot less prone to deflating–especially the higher end models. They usually come with an air pump that will blow them up in a just a few minutes, even the queen and king size beds.

Some of the nicer inflatable air mattress models even have an extra air chamber on top that’s easily adjusted so you can get the right firmness for your back. This is a great option because on the first night of your trip you may want one level of firmness, but by the end you may require something a little different. This flexibility makes being comfortable easy.

There really is something out there for every price range, you can find a cheap twenty dollar air mattress that will be better than sleeping on the ground (and still better than a lot of the options in the past) or a nicer model going anywhere up into the thousands. There are so many options that you can really set the amount you’re willing to spend and then see what you like in that range and still have to narrow it down. This means there should be nothing stopping you from the comfortable nights rest you want.

For camping all you’ll really need to do is find a relatively flat position, unfold the bed inside your tent, attach the air pump, wait only a few minutes for it to fill up–I’ve seen it done in close to one minute on a queen sized bed–and you’re done! Having an easy set up is very important while camping.

Because they’re both comfortable, easy to set up, and because a good nights sleep is essential to your day ahead, it seems obvious that you should choose an inflatable air mattress for camping.
